The Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) is today hosting an orientation meeting at the Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe, focusing on the formation of a national committee for sports for people with disabilities.
This initiative follows recommendations from the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Sports for People with Disabilities Conference, held in Gaborone, Botswana, in June 2024, where member states were urged to establish umbrella bodies to coordinate activities of disability sports associations.
The meeting has brought together key stakeholders, including Special Olympics Malawi, Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC), Malawi Union for the Blind, Deaflympics Committee, and the Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA).
The formation of an umbrella body will be a significant milestone in promoting inclusive sports development in Malawi. It will strengthen coordination, raise visibility, and ensure that athletes with disabilities enjoy equal opportunities to excel at both national and international levels.
