Malawi has reached a historic milestone in karate, as three of its officials have become the first-ever in the country’s history to be certified at the regional level by the Union of African Karate Federations (UFAK).
The groundbreaking achievement occurred during the UFAK Region South event held in Durban, South Africa, from 22nd to 25th May 2025. The event brought together participants from eight countries: Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Botswana, and Angola, and featured intensive training and examination sessions for coaches and referees.
The three pioneering Malawian officials, Kelvin Mwale, Sithembile Bilima, and Kelvin Chimdima completed the technical training and passed their final exams, earning them certification at UFAK Region 5 level.
Kelvin Mwale is now certified as a Kata and Kumite coach, Sithembile Bilima also earned certification as a Kata and Kumite coach, and Kelvin Chimdima qualified as a Region 5 Kata referee.
Their success marks the first time in the history of karate in Malawi that officials have attained such prestigious regional accreditation, a landmark moment that sets a new standard for the sport in the country.
Speaking after the certification, Sithembile Bilima described the moment as both humbling and inspiring.
“Being part of this historic achievement is an honour. We’re proud to represent Malawi and are eager to share what we’ve learned to help build a stronger future for karate back home,” she said.
The Malawi Karate Federation president, Joseph Kawelama, applauded the trio, calling their accomplishment a major breakthrough that reflects the nation’s growing dedication to improving standards in martial arts.
‘’It is encouraging to see such dedication from young people taking up such leadership roles in Karate. We will keep educating more officials and push them towards Regional and world qualifications. There is a strong relationship between the quality of our athletes and the quality of our officials,’’ explained Kawelama
This certification not only enhances Malawi’s representation in regional karate governance and competitions but also paves the way for the future development of coaching and officiating expertise across the country.
