The Malawi Women’s National Football Team put in a brave and commendable performance during their international friendly against Morocco on Thursday evening at Kenitra Stadium, despite suffering a 4-2 defeat.
Malawi seized early control of the match, with captain Tabitha Chawinga opening the scoring from the penalty spot in the 27th minute. This was followed by a well-taken goal from Rose Kabzere in the 35th minute, giving the Scorchers a 2-0 lead.
However, Morocco quickly responded before halftime, applying pressure on the Malawi defence. This resulted in an own goal by Bernadetta Mkandawire in the 40th minute and a strike from Sakina Ouzraoui in the 42nd minute. In the second half, the hosts extended their lead with goals from Ibtissam Jraidi in the 56th minute and Kenza Chapelle in added time.
Despite the defeat, the match provided vital lessons and key positives as the Scorchers continue their preparations for the final qualifying round of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) against Angola in October.
