Nov 1, 2024 | News

The inaugural National E-sports Championship will be held this weekend at Khichini Hub at 18 Convention Drive opposite Umodzi Park in Lilongwe from 9:00 am

This highly anticipated event will feature popular games such as EAFC24, Tekken 8, and Tekken 8 (Women), with an impressive cash prize pool of MWK 585,000, alongside exclusive merchandise

Organized with the support of the Malawi National Sports Council, the tournament aims to promote E-sports as a viable career pathway and cultural phenomenon in Malawi. In addition to showcasing competitive gameplay, the event will spotlight video games created by Malawian developers, giving attendees a taste of locally crafted gaming experiences.

The championship promises exciting prospects for participants, particularly in the Tekken 8 Women’s-only category. The winner from this category will have the honour of representing Malawi at the Mzansi Esports Championship, hosted by SAGES Esports, in South Africa. The Mzansi Esports Championship is scheduled to take place at the renowned Rage Expo, Africa’s largest gaming and technology showcase, offering a prestigious international platform for Malawi’s top female gamer.

E-sports Vice President Robert Cheleuka expressed joy and happiness in conducting the first-ever E-sport national championship in Malawi

“We expect to demonstrate how powerful E-sports can be in opening doors for the youth and the nation. Video games are embedded in Malawian contemporary culture, yet few realize the skill and discipline they demand. We see gaming as a potential avenue for forex generation through local game development and international tournaments. We call on stakeholders, especially ISPs and tech firms, to support this initiative financially. We’re also grateful to the Malawi National Sports Council for their continued support.” explained Cheleuka

The championship marks a milestone for E-sports in Malawi, highlighting the growth of the industry and its potential to empower youth while creating economic opportunities. The National Esports Championship is expected to draw significant attention, fueling enthusiasm for a promising future in Malawian gaming and technology. The championship will attract participants of all genders from 18 years and above.
