The Malawi Karate Team has departed for Zimbabwe, where they will compete in the prestigious Kurai Open Championship from November 16 to 17, 2024, in Harare.

Prior to this event, the team competed in the Lusaka Karate Open Championship on November 9 in Zambia, showcasing impressive skill and dedication. Their efforts yielded a remarkable haul of 3 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze medals.

Notable performances included Samatha Mwamondwe’s gold in kata in the under-15 girls’ category, while Pemhpo Datchi also took gold in kata for the under-17 girls, alongside Catherine Chawinga, who triumphed in kumite for the same age group.

The team’s strength was further evident through silver medals earned by Samatha Mwamondwe (kumite), Catherine Chawinga (kata), and Maureen Justine in the under-15 girls’ category. Maureen also added a bronze in kata, while Joseph Chawinga brought home a bronze in kumite for senior men (65 kg).

Following their success in Lusaka, the team now turns its focus to the Kurai Open Championship, a key step in their preparation for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games, set for June next year in Namibia.
