Blantyre will come alive this weekend as 14 of the country’s top hockey teams converge at the Hockey Stadium for the much-anticipated First Capital Bank (FCB) National Hockey Tournament, running from Friday, 25 July to Sunday, 27 July 2025.

The national showdown follows two weeks of intense regional qualifiers across the Southern, Central, and Northern regions, which determined the final lineup of both men’s and women’s teams.

In the men’s category, the participating teams include Genetrix, Scorpions, Braves, Nyala, Navy Malawi, Zomba Select, Cobbe Sticks, and City Wolves. The teams have been grouped into two pools, with the top two from each advancing to the knockout stage.

The women’s competition features Simba, Scorpions, Genetrix Capital Braves, Braves, and Nyala, who will contest in a round-robin format to determine the champions.

Speaking ahead of the event, Hockey Association of Malawi (HAM) General Secretary Geoffrey Biya hailed the growth of the tournament and the impact of FCB’s continued sponsorship.

“This tournament has grown tremendously thanks to First Capital Bank. It began as a regional event in the South, but today it’s a national competition with strong representation from across Malawi. We believe this is a major step forward for the sport, and we’re excited to see the level of talent that will be on display.” Explained Biya

Winners in both the men’s and women’s categories will walk away with MK1 million each, with the runners-up receiving MK750,000 and third-place finishers taking home MK500,000.

The tournament not only promises exciting matches but also serves as a vital platform for talent identification and the continued growth of hockey in Malawi.
