Malawi’s most talented track and field athletes are set to battle for national honours at the 2025 National Track and Field Championship scheduled to take place this Saturday, 21st June, at the prestigious Kamuzu Academy in Kasungu.
The national showdown follows a series of successful regional qualifiers held last weekend across the country in Zomba (South), Lilongwe (Centre), and Mzuzu (North), where athletes battled for the opportunity to represent their regions at the national stage. Now, with regional champions selected, the stage is set for what promises to be a thrilling contest of speed, strength, and skill as they compete for national glory.
This year’s championship will feature a wide array of events, including track races such as the 100m, 200m, 800m, 10,000m, hurdles, and the 4x100m and 4x400m relays. Field events will include the discus, javelin, shot put, high jump, long jump, and triple jump.
General Secretary of Athletics Malawi (AM), Nicholas Kanyenda, expressed confidence ahead of the event, highlighting the depth of talent witnessed during the regional qualifiers.
“We’ve seen incredible talent emerge from the regions, and we’re expecting fireworks at Kamuzu Academy. We are calling on the public to come in large numbers to witness and support our athletes as they compete for national honours. This event not only crowns national champions but also helps us identify athletes with potential to represent Malawi on the international stage,” explained Kanyenda.
A total of 60 athletes (34 male and 26 female) have qualified for the championship, with 20 athletes representing each region. Winners in each event will receive a medal and cash prize.
The gates at Kamuzu Academy will open at 8:00 AM, and the public is encouraged to attend and cheer on the nation’s rising athletics stars as they compete for pride, prizes, and the prestigious title of national champion. The event is organized by Athletics Malawi with support from the Malawi National Council of Sports.
