The Malawi women’s national cricket team will kick off their 2025 Kwibuka T20 Tournament campaign this afternoon with a high-profile clash against Brazil at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium from 13:45 CAT.
The team arrived in Rwanda yesterday evening, full of confidence and determination to make a strong impression at this prestigious annual tournament.
This marks Malawi’s second appearance at the Kwibuka Tournament since its inception in 2014. Their last participation was in 2024, where they finished 7th out of 10 competing nations. With lessons learned and renewed ambition, the team is looking to build on last year’s performance and make a bigger impact this time around.
A strong 14-member squad, led by captain Euless Chiralile, is representing the country. The squad includes:
Lydia Dimba, Sungemi Kananji, Praise Maziya, Ketrina Chinagipe, Febbie Malefula, Sophina Chinawa, Eve Kabwere, Christina Bwanali, Esther Richard, Alinafe Alfonso, Tadala Mpanadakwaya, Thriphonia Luka, and Lucy Malino.
The Kwibuka T20 Tournament, originally named Kwibuka Cricket for Peace, is held annually in Rwanda in remembrance of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Since its launch in 2014, the tournament has evolved from a regional East African competition into a global event, now featuring teams from across Africa and beyond.
As Malawi begins their journey in this year’s edition, fans back home will be hoping for a strong performance that reflects the team’s growth, resilience, and national pride on the international stage.
