The Chief Executive Officer of the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS), Dr. Henry Kamata, has hailed a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) as a critical step towards the promotion and development of sports in the country.
Speaking during the signing ceremony held at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre, Dr. Kamata described the agreement as a two-fold partnership that will play a significant role in elevating sports visibility and nurturing talent across Malawi.
“At the heart of this agreement is the launch of a brand called Malawi Sport, which will serve as a platform to showcase the country’s abundant and diverse sporting talent. This partnership aims to fill key gaps in the sports sector, such as uncovering hidden talent and building the capacity of our sports journalists,” explained Dr Kamata
He further highlighted that MNCS will provide logistical support to journalists, enabling them to cover and report on various sporting events across the country. MNCS will also support training initiatives to enhance the skills of journalists in sports writing and reporting, while creating platforms to spotlight different sporting disciplines.
MBC’s Director of Engineering, Aideni Gumeni, expressed optimism that the partnership would significantly expand sports content on MBC platforms.
“In the past, most Malawians had limited access to a wide range of sporting activities through our platforms. We focused heavily on football and netball, but Malawi has over 40 registered sports associations. Through this MoU, MBC is committed to providing a platform for all sporting disciplines to showcase their activities,” explained Gumeni
Boxing Association of Malawi General Secretary, Agnes Mtimaukanena, welcomed the development, describing the agreement as a game changer.
“This is a very welcome initiative. As the CEO mentioned, this product is designed to give space to all sports disciplines. It is now time for the nation to learn more about boxing and other less-publicized sports.” Said Mtimaukanena
The partnership between MNCS and MBC is expected to transform the national sports landscape by offering broad coverage across television, radio, and digital platforms. It will bring lesser-known sports into the spotlight and ensure that inspiring sports stories from across Malawi reach the public like never before.
With this agreement, MNCS and MBC reaffirm their commitment to building a vibrant and inclusive sports culture through enhanced media exposure and public engagement, paving the way for a brighter future for sports in Malawi.
