The Malawi Karate Federation (MKF) has achieved a major milestone by securing provisional membership with the World Karate Federation (WKF), the sport’s largest global governing body.
This recognition marks a significant leap forward in MKF’s development, granting the federation formal legitimacy from the WKF, the African Karate Federation (UFAK), and the Region 5 Karate Federation.
The milestone comes five years after initial efforts to establish the federation began in August 2019, during a meeting held at the Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS) boardroom. What started as a conversation has now culminated in an international breakthrough.
MKF President Joseph Kawelama described the recognition as a proud moment for Malawi’s sporting landscape.
“From a conversation in a boardroom to being recognised on the world stage, this is a new chapter for karate in Malawi. It means Malawi is now officially acknowledged in global karate circles, which will enhance the visibility of local athletes, coaches, and officials. With the backing of WKF and UFAK, our athletes are now eligible to compete in prestigious events such as regional championships, continental games, the Commonwealth Games, and even Olympic qualifiers.” Said Kawelama
He added that the provisional membership gives MKF access to crucial development opportunities, including international training seminars, coaching clinics, and referee courses. In some cases, member nations also receive equipment support or funding under WKF and UFAK programs.
“The provisional status comes with a trial period during which we must demonstrate compliance with governance, competition, and ethical standards set by international karate bodies. With this recognition, we expect increased interest from the youth and potential sponsors, which will boost the sport’s growth at both grassroots and elite levels,” Kawelama said.
Last year, the Malawi Karate Federation had its first international outing, competing in the Lusaka Karate Open Championship in Zambia and the Kurai Open Championship in Zimbabwe. The team brought home an impressive tally of 15 medals—5 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze.
Karate is also among the sports Malawi will feature in at the 11th edition of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Youth Games, set for July 2025 in Windhoek, Namibia.
