In a bid to recognize the vital role women and girls play in the development and promotion of sports in Malawi, the Women’s Leadership Program and Sport for All have organized a Big Walk set for Wednesday, March 26, 2025, in Lilongwe as part of Women’s Month celebrations.
Speaking at a press briefing held at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe, Mgeni Gondwe, Chairperson of the event’s organizing committee, emphasized that the walk aims to raise awareness about women’s readiness to take up leadership roles in sports.
“Many people do not realize that women are ready and capable of taking on leadership roles in sports. This event is a way to create that awareness and encourage more women to step up,” said Gondwe.
She further announced that a panel discussion will be held alongside the event, bringing together representatives from various sporting associations to deliberate on ways to empower women in sports leadership.
“We need to ask ourselves: Are we not stepping up, or is it that decision-makers don’t recognize our presence? We must continue creating awareness so that more women come forward and actively contribute to the development of sports,” she added.
Meanwhile, Malawi National Council of Sports Regional and Recreation Officer Funny Phiri has called on both the private and public sectors to support the initiative.
“We have engaged key stakeholders, including the police, military, and various sports associations, to ensure the success of this event. However, as a mother body, we cannot do it alone. We urge the corporate world to step in and support this noble cause, as it aligns with efforts to encourage more women and girls to participate in sports,” said Phiri.
The Big Walk will cover a route starting from Lilongwe Bridge, passing through Area 13, ADL House, Capital Hotel Roundabout, BICC, Parliament, Reserve Bank, National Bank, and back to Lilongwe Bridge. All other events will take place at Kamuzu Institute for sports
This year’s event will be held under the theme:
“Celebrating Women’s Achievements, Advancing Equality, and Empowering Women in Sports: Accelerate Action.”
The initiative aims to inspire more women to engage in sports, take on leadership roles, and break barriers in the sporting world.
