MALAWI SPORTS AWARDS TO BE HELD IN MANGOCHI FOR THE FIRST TIME

Nov 8, 2024 | News

The Malawi National Council of Sports has announced that the sixth edition of the Malawi Sports Awards will be held at Sun Bird Nkopola on 28 February 2025, with the theme “Promoting Sporting Excellence.”

The announcement was made by Mr. Gladson Kuyeri, a board member of the Malawi National Council of Sports and chairperson of the Marketing and Research Committee, at Amaryllis Hotel in Blantyre.

Addressing the media, Kuyeri explained that for the first time since the awards’ inception in 2018, the public will be involved through voting, and the awards will also feature some new categories.

“This year, we have moved the awards to Sunbird Nkopola in Mangochi from Bingu International Convention Center (BICC) in Lilongwe. Previously, we relied solely on technical experts to select winners. But this time, things will be different because we will use public voting, meaning the individual with the highest votes will win,” he explained.

This year’s awards will include 14 categories: Sports Person of the Year, Coach of the Year, Sportswoman of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Sportswoman with Disability of the Year, Sportsman with Disability of the Year, Best Sports Development Program of the Year, Junior Female Sports Person of the Year, Junior Male Sports Person of the Year, Journalist of the Year (Print), Journalist of the Year (Electronic), National Team of the Year, and Sports Association of the Year.

Mr. Limbani Matola, chairperson of the main organizing committee, stated that people should expect an improved Malawi Sports Award event next year.

“We will have reputable judges, and all 40 sports associations will select individuals they believe were outstanding in the year 2024. We will then conduct a screening process for the nominees, where three will be shortlisted.

“We would like to invite the private sector, companies, and individuals to be part of this colorful event, where they will not only serve as sponsors but also gain visibility for their goods and services among potential customers,” he said.

Nominations for this year’s awards will begin on November 20 and end on December 26.

This will be followed by the shortlisting of nominees from December 26-28.

An adjudication stage will take place from December 29-30, followed by a selection process from January 2-4.

Public voting will commence on January 10 for 10 days, with aggregation occurring between February 22 and 23.
