PETER ZULU AND MARIA MOFFAT TRIUMPH IN MALAWI CYCLING GRAND PRIX ELITE RACES

The Malawi Cycling Grand Prix took place on Saturday at Gateway Mall in Lilongwe, kicking off at 7:00 am. The event drew over 100 cyclists, gathering to celebrate the silver jubilee of the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5.

Participants competed across four main categories: the 100 km men’s elite race, the 50 km women’s elite race, a 50 km mountain bike race, a 20 km social cycling event, and various children’s cycling events, all of which started and ended at Gateway Mall’s parking area.

In the 100 km men’s elite race, Peter Zulu claimed victory with a finishing time of 2:58.22, earning MK600,000. Gift Manyenje came in second with a time of 3:01.52, taking home MK500,000, while Blessings Kumwenda placed third at 3:10.41 and received MK400,000.

Maria Moffat emerged as the winner of the 50 km women’s elite race, completing the course in 2:03.11 and winning MK300,000. Royce Popiwa finished second in 2:08.16, earning MK200,000, and Thandiwe Lazaro placed third with a time of 2:11.56, receiving MK100,000.

Kwame Kayira took first place in the 20 km social riders’ event.

In the children’s cycling events, Praise Kayira won in the boys’ 10-14 category, completing a 4-kilometer race. Christian Chipeta took top honors in the boys’ 15-17 category after cycling 8 kilometers, and Fiona Kayira was victorious in the girls’ 6-9 category, completing a 2-kilometer course. All participating children received school supplies worth MK300,000.
