The Malawi Under-19 Women’s Cricket Team has departed for Kigali, Rwanda, to compete in the ICC Women’s U19 T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Qualifiers. Malawi is set to face off against Eswatini, Ghana, and Sierra Leone in Group B. To advance to the semi-finals, the team must finish in the top two of their group.
The stakes are high, as the top two teams in each group will progress to the semi-finals. The two finalists, along with the winner of the third-place playoff, will earn a spot in the next stage of the qualifiers—the Division 1 Africa Qualifier. From there, only one team will secure a coveted place in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in 2025 in Malaysia.
Leading the Malawian squad is captain Katrina Chingaipe, who has already made her debut with the senior national team. Malawi will begin their campaign on August 21st, taking on Ghana in their first match.
In Group A, Botswana, Mozambique, Kenya, and Lesotho will battle it out for their chance to advance. With both groups featuring strong contenders, the competition promises to be fierce as each team vies for a place in cricketing history.
